Hi, I’m Tracy!

I've been teaching students to loosen up and find joy through art for more than 20 years. When I was a kid I really believed that art was some kind of special gift only given out to a select few at birth. In my family it was my brother Jason who seemed to have the magic art gene. He would spend hours sprawled on the floor sketching and whenever I tried to do the same my work would inevitably end up in the bin.

It wasn’t until I was 33 that I joined a local art class and my whole world shifted. Within two weeks I had the epiphany that art wasn't just for the lucky few and that creativity encompassed all parts of ourselves, that creating things; art, gardens, stories, games etc. was actually our birthright and not only that, but spending time creating and making art could enhance EVERY single aspect of our LIVES!!

I started teaching way back then, gathering the neighborhood kids into my garden shed, and since then I have been honing my skills with a mission to bring more joy, more play, more confidence and more ease to the lives of my students (now from 70+ countries around the world!) through artmaking!

Painting faces has always fascinated me, so much so, that portraiture was my first love when I began making art. A few years back I created my extensive Face Fascination class which has already been taken by hundreds of students!

Many of you were still a little nervous to take the leap into such a large course and asked me to create something smaller, something you could dip your toes (and paint brushes) into, a taster to give you the confidence to go further…

So here it is!

Do the insides of your mind sound like this?

  • My portraits look like a toddler made them...
  • How did they get such expression? Where do I even start?
  • Which materials should I use and what works with what? Are there any rules?
  • How can I stop comparing my work unfavorably to others and paint with more freedom?

don't worry...

EVERYONE can paint faces.

“For years, I’ve longed to take a painting workshop from Tracy Verdugo. Tracy is a beautiful and generous soul and a wonderful artist, who has a special gift for teaching visual art to people who don’t consider themselves visual artists... I’ve admired her devotion to teaching for YEARS. Tracy, you are a gift. Thank you for this day. I’m going to sleep with my fingernails caked with paint, and my imagination full of color.”

- Elizabeth Gilbert

Imagine...

having enough techniques and inspiration at your fingertips to keep you making moves with confidence.

Imagine...

that your biggest problem is that you see an abundance of creative possibilities instead of not enough.

Imagine...

approaching your work with a playful sense of KNOWING that every mark you make has the potential to spark curiosity and wonder.

Imagine...

feeling a sense of ease when you approach your painting, banishing the word “mistake” and embracing the term “happy accident”!

Overridingly the three main issues students around the world express to me are; the desire to loosen up, to stop comparing themselves to others & to learn how to approach and infuse their artmaking with more ease, play and joy.

Making a move and seeing what shows up. Slowing down - so important. And your soft and reassuring voice. Your sense of humor and clarity of process. Thank you, Tracy."

It has been a wonderful enriching experience for me. She is organized, clear and so generously shares her abundance of artistic knowledge and experience. I truly recommend taking her courses. Thank you, Tracy, to opening my eyes again to the possibilities."

Each video tutorial is between 20-35 minutes long so they are perfect to watch at any time during the day. However as the goal is to be as creative as possible, you’ll be wanting hours in your studio by the end of this!

Are there captions/subtitles?

Yes! The videos in this online course currently have English captions and Spanish subtitles.

I don’t have many art supplies. Can I still do these lessons?

Absolutely! While Tracy always has her favorite supplies, we want you to be open and adaptable and use what you have. Don’t have acrylic paints? Try doing the same tutorial with colored pencils and see what unique results you can get!

Having said that, here is a list of all the supplies Tracy uses in this art course:

  • Sketchbook, sketching pencils, watercolor paper, various brushes, white gesso, various fluid acrylic paints, willow & compressed charcoal, paper towel, bamboo skewers, spray bottle with water, watercolor pencils or similar, various gel pens, white acrylic ink, matte medium, collage ephemera.

I already bought another one of your online courses. How is this different?

All of Tracy’s online classes are unique and completely different from one another. This course is both for artists who feel they cannot create successful portraits and for those who are just starting out. Tracy's aim is to provide inspiration and possibility thinking for all creatives!

Can I exhibit or sell the work I create in this workshop?

One of the main intentions in my courses is to help you find ways to connect with a style all of your own. So, with this in mind, I’m happy for you to show and sell original, innovative work created. If, however, you feel that you want to follow along more closely and produce pieces very similar to those within the projects that is all good, but I would ask that you don’t put those pieces out to exhibit or sell if they are close copies of my work. I trust that your heart will tell you what is too close. We also ask that you understand that these are Tracy's copyrighted techniques and may not be taught or packaged as a class by any individual other than Tracy without express consent. ♥

Can I teach these tutorials in my own classes?

“Your method of teaching is both gentle and explosive, you share lovingly from your heart giving your students such a sense of freedom while providing direction. You manage to gently coax your students while encouraging them to soar and find their own way. I have taken others classes and enjoyed most but have to say that working under your tutelage has been my most enjoyable and has opened me up not only in my approach to my art but also in my life as a whole.”
